Poker formats and what to expect
SkyCity Hamilton runs three different poker styles, and they each behave very differently in practice. Times, structure, and even who you play against all shift from format to format. Our team went through the official schedule and matched it with third-party data to piece together a realistic overview - showing up without this sorted out first is one of those problems you can easily avoid.
Live Texas Hold’em is the main draw. Two tables are scheduled every Saturday and Sunday, opening from 4pm and usually rolling on into the night. Registration kicks off at 3pm through the Poker Phone text system. Seats go to the first 18 players who text in. Anyone after that ends up on a waiting list. So if you are planning a weekend cash session, sending that text before 3pm is not a side note, it is how you actually get in the game.
Ultimate Texas Hold’em is available every day from 4pm. This one is a casino table game format, so it is you versus the house instead of player versus player. Because of that, the table does not have to be full before play starts. In practice, it tends to be the most approachable option in the room. Three Card Poker runs Thursday through Sunday from 6pm, and it also uses the player-versus-house model.
| Poker format | Days available | Opening time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas Hold’em (live) | Saturday, Sunday | 4pm (reg. from 3pm) | First 18 players seated; waiting list after |
| Ultimate Texas Hold’em | Daily | 4pm | Casino table game format |
| Three Card Poker | Thursday - Sunday | 6pm | Player vs. house format |
One practical habit that helps everywhere, not only at SkyCity Hamilton: if you are building your visit around a specific poker format, check the official site the evening before. Start times do move around more than most casual players realise, and walking into a room only to find your game has been rescheduled is a rough way to spend a Saturday.
The gaming floor beyond poker
Poker is a part of the offer, not the whole thing. The main floor at SkyCity Hamilton holds around 23 table games plus roughly 330 gaming machines. Alongside the poker tables you will see blackjack, roulette, baccarat, Rapid Baccarat, Rapid Roulette, and Caribbean Stud Poker on the layout. There are also progressive jackpot tables in the mix.
Entry rules are strict on age. You must be at least 20 to get onto the casino floor, and you will be asked for valid photo ID at the door. Staff are not working off personal discretion here - this comes straight from the Gambling Act 2003. Accepted identification types are clearly listed at the entrance, so it is easy to check if yours fits.
Casino hours and the “open 24/7” question
SkyCity Hamilton does not operate on a simple 24/7 clock. Instead, it follows a set weekly timetable. From Monday to Thursday, the casino opens at 10am and closes again at 4am. From Friday morning, trading runs right through the weekend without a break. There are also a few full closures: Christmas Day and Good Friday are completely shut. On Anzac Day gaming pauses from 3am to 1pm.
| Day | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Monday - Thursday | 10:00am - 4:00am |
| Friday | From 10:00am (continuous into weekend) |
| Saturday - Sunday | Continuous trading |
| Christmas Day | Closed |
| Good Friday | Closed |
| Anzac Day | Closed 3:00am - 1:00pm |
You may see some directories online claiming SkyCity Hamilton is open 24/7. When our team compared those listings with the structure on the official site and other references, the pattern was clear: people tend to use “24/7” as shorthand for the long weekend trading window. It does not mean the doors are open nonstop every day of the week. Keep that in mind if you are planning to arrive late on a Monday or midweek.
Registering for live Texas Hold’em
The way you lock in a seat for live Texas Hold’em is specific enough that it makes sense to walk through it step by step. There is no casual walk-up list at the table. Everything runs through the Poker Phone text service, and the number of spots is capped.
First, double-check the game is running that day - live Hold’em sessions are Saturday and Sunday only.
On the day, use the Poker Phone text system to register before 3pm. That timestamp will decide whether you are inside the first 18 or not.
Head to 346 Victoria Street, Hamilton Central, and aim to arrive a bit before 4pm so you are not rushing through the door.
At the entrance, present valid photo ID. Remember, you must be 20 or older or you will simply be turned away.
Once inside, go to gaming floor reception and confirm that your registration has been received and logged.
If you fall inside the first 18 registrations, staff will allocate you a seat at one of the two live Texas Hold’em tables.
If all seats are already taken, ask the team on duty about your position on the waiting list and how it is moving.
Tables run on into the late evening, so if you show up later, you still have a chance to sit down as players leave and spots open.
The waiting list is not a dead end. In longer sessions people drop out for breaks, cash out, or simply head home, and floor staff can usually give you a rough sense of whether your place in the queue is likely to convert into a seat.
